  2.                                2 Getting Started

  5.    This section describes how to install the RomMaker demonstration program
  6.    on your Apple Macintosh computer. It also describes the system require-
  7.    ments necessary when you purchase the RomMaker system.
  8.  
  9.    2.1 The Hardware Software Package
  10.  
  11.    RomMaker comes with the following items, when you purchase the product.
  12.  
  13.         *    Depending on your system, you will receive one of three hard-
  14.              ware drive configurations:
  15.  
  16.                   1)   A WCD-ROM tower subsystem containing a hard disk and
  17.                        the JVC WCD-ROM drive model XR-W1001 with its power
  18.                        cord.  The unit connects to the SCSI port on you
  19.                        Macintosh using the SCSI connector cable.
  20.  
  21.                   2)   An external Digital Audio Tape (DAT) drive model
  22.                        XM-S5442EV which connects to the SCSI port with its
  23.                        power cord.
  24.  
  25.                   3)   A WCD-ROM tower subsystem containing a hard disk,
  26.                        the JVC WCD-ROM drive model XR-W1001 and an internal
  27.                        half height JVC DATA-DAT drive model XM-5442EV with
  28.                        its power cord.  The unit connects to the SCSI port
  29.                        of your Macintosh using the SCSI connector cable.
  30.  
  31.         *    A SCSI cable and SCSI terminator which connects the DAT drive
  32.              or WCD-ROM tower subsystem to the SCSI port. The terminator
  33.              will depend on the type of Macintosh you use. If you have a
  34.              Macintosh FX, you must use the special black terminator
  35.              provided with your FX system.
  36.  
  37.         *    One blank WCD-ROM cartridge if you purchased the WCD-ROM sys-
  38.              tem or one blank DAT tape cartridge and one cleaning cartridge
  39.              if you purchased the DAT drive system.
  40.         *    In a sealed envelope, one 3.5" disk containing the appropriate
  41.  
  42.              RomMaker software for your hardware configuration. Please read
  43.              the License Agreement before opening this envelope.
  44.         *    This Reference Guide, plus the Owner's Manual for the hard-
  45.              ware.
  46.  
  47.    2.2 System Requirements
  48.  
  49.    RomMaker requires the following hardware and software:
  50.  
  51.         *    A Macintosh II or higher computer.
  52.  
  53.         *    System 7 operating system with Hypercard Version 2.1 or
  54.              higher. Please note that the Personal RomMaker does not work
  55.              on System 6. Please also note that this demonstration software
  56.              also requires System 7.0 and Hypercard Version 2.1 or higher
  57.              to operate.
  58.  
  59.         *    At least 4MB of memory on your system. RomMaker will use the
  60.              hard disk if it runs out of memory and will continue process-
  61.              ing. However, the speed of processing can be significantly
  62.              improved if you have more memory.
  63.  
  64.         *    Approximately 2MB of additional hard disk space available for
  65.              software and temporary files created during processing. This
  66.              demonstration software requires an additional 5MB of hard disk
  67.              space. See software installation section for details.
  68.  
  69.         *    Network or local hard disk access to all files you want to put
  70.              on the CD-ROM.

  72.    2.3 Software Installation Overview
  73.  
  74.    Using the RomMaker demonstration software is a four step step process:
  75.  
  76.         1.   Copy the RomMaker Demo folder to your hard disk using the
  77.              Finder.
  78.  
  79.         2.   Install the demonstration software. The demonstration install
  80.              is a special application that locates upto 5MB contiguous
  81.              space on any of your hard disks for use by the demonstration
  82.              software to simulate the WCD-ROM hard disk and WCD-ROM drive.
  83.              This RomMaker demonstration is a fully functional RomMaker
  84.              allowing you to make a small CD-ROM premastered image. Since
  85.              you obviously do not have the JVC WCD-ROM tower system con-
  86.              taining the hard disk and Write Once CD-ROM drive, the demon-
  87.              stration software uses upto 5MB of your hard disk to mimic the
  88.              hardware that would typically come with the RomMaker.
  89.  
  90.              To install the demonstration software, invoke the application
  91.              called 'RomMaker Install' in your RomMaker Demo folder. The
  92.              install process scans all your mounted volumes and locates the
  93.              necessary contigous space required for the RomMaker demonstra-
  94.              tion to operate.  It also copies the necessary files from your
  95.              floppy to the RomMaker Demo folder on the desktop of your
  96.              system disk.

  98.              The install will fail if it cannot locate between 2 to 5MB of
  99.              contiguous space on any volume. Contigous space is space which
  100.              is not fragmented when it is stored on the hard disk. If the
  101.              install fails, you must run a defragmentation utility such as
  102.              the Norton Utilities to optimize your disk so that such conti-
  103.              gous space is available to the RomMaker demonstration soft-
  104.              ware. Simply defragment your hard disk and then repeat the
  105.              install process.

  107.              The install program will successfully run of it finds contigu-
  108.              ous space between 2MB to 5MB. At the end of the install, it
  109.              will inform you of the maximum size of CD-ROM image you will
  110.              be able to make, determined by the contigous space found on
  111.              your volume.

  113.         3.   Run the RomMaker demo software as many times as you prefer. To
  114.              run the demonstration software, simply double click on the
  115.              RomMaker tower Icon and the system will put you into the
  116.              demonstration. Follow the guidelines suggested in Chapter 3 to
  117.              make your CD-ROM using this demonstration software.

  119.         4.   De-install the demonstration software.  When you finally fin-
  120.              ish evaluating the RomMaker, you need to free up the space
  121.              which the demonstration system uses. To do this, you must run
  122.              the application 'RomMaker De-Install' located in your RomMaker
  123.              Demo folder. This application will free up the contiguous
  124.              space used by the demonstration software. Once de-install
  125.              frees up this space, simply drag the RomDemo folder to the
  126.              Trash to delete these files. Please note that you should
  127.              de-install just once when you have completed all your evalu-
  128.              ation.
